From Intern to Junior Quantitative Researcher: A VNT Technologies Success Story

At VNT Technologies, our internships are more than just a summer experience - they are a bridge to a career. We design these programs to deliver tangible value to both the student and our team. Rather than observing from the sidelines, our interns are integrated into our daily operations, taking on complex, real-world projects that directly impact our algorithmic trading infrastructure development. We actively seek out highly motivated students who thrive on solving complex problems, with the ultimate goal of transitioning our top performers into full-time roles.

Laurynas is a prime example of this approach in action. Joining us as a Quantitative Research Summer Intern in 2025, he consistently demonstrated exceptional technical capabilities and curiosity in understanding the field. Recognizing his contributions, we invited him to join our team full-time as a Junior Quantitative Researcher. Now, six months into his permanent role, Laurynas shares his perspective on the internship and his ongoing development at VNT Technologies.

Laurynas, can you describe your career path and what led you to pursue a Junior Quantitative Researcher role at VNT Technologies?

I first heard of the internship possibility at the end of my first year at university and applied without high expectations. I was somehow offered the internship position. Throughout the six weeks of research, I was able to prove my capabilities in research, critical thinking, problem-solving, and data analysis. When the summer internship ended, I was offered the opportunity to work at VNT Technologies parallel to my studies, which gave me the freedom to create my own schedule. Without much hesitation, I took this opportunity. I have been working and gaining invaluable experience so far.

What kind of problems and tasks did you work on during your internship?

During my internship, I researched market signals and how they propagate through many exchanges. I had to purify the signals from raw data, and also analyze which cases led to a reaction on other exchanges. In a nutshell, the focus was on trying to predict market movements caused by specific signals.

What was the most valuable skill or insight you gained during your internship?

It is difficult to be precise when analyzing something abstract, so there arises a sort of balancing game: trying to minimize false positives and false negatives while also making sure the data set is sufficiently large to be able to draw conclusions. Small errors can compound into significant issues over time. I definitely learned a lot, questioning each part of the process and deciding whether the solution is optimal.

Now working as a Junior Quantitative Researcher, what does a typical day at work look like at VNT Technologies?

No day is the same, as it depends on the project I am working on at the time. Usually, I spend time maintaining the codebase, handling small fixes, or adding new features. At the same time, I always have a larger research task on the side. I can work on it, leave it for a bit to think, and come back later with fresh ideas. I really enjoy this kind of flexibility - it allows me to be more creative and pushes me to think outside the box.

What has been the most interesting or challenging project you’ve worked on so far, and why?

That would definitely be trying to do an overall analysis of our trades. It oversees many aspects, such as : merging information from various sources; defining how the market was acting at the time; determining our process for getting to a trade, whether it was good or bad; identifying the bottleneck; and what we should focus our efforts on. The methods have to be quite complex to complete such an analysis, but also sufficiently optimized to take a reasonable amount of time.

How would you describe the team culture and working environment at VNT Technologies?

People here have a good sense of humor, so team-building and lunch breaks are always fun. In the office, the atmosphere is a bit more serious, but not in a stressful way. Everyone here seems to love what they do. The work is both challenging and fun at the same time.

Since you are already a quantitative researcher, what advice would you give to students who want to start their career in this field?

My biggest advice? Don’t be afraid to apply to internships. Unlike a full-time role, an internship is designed for your growth – you are not supposed to know much and it doesn’t require previous job experience. Your goal is to be proactive, ambitious, and learn a lot. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Financial markets can often feel counterintuitive or illogical at first glance. However, when you really take your time and try to understand it, everything starts making sense. Curiosity is your greatest asset.
